Artist’s Statement

Nancy studied Modern Dance at Hunter College in NYC, graduating with a BA in Dance and a minor in Art History. After nearly a decade in New York, she decided to concentrate on the visual arts of drawing and painting and returned to school in St. Louis, MO. She graduated from Maryville University with a BFA.

Spending her summers on Cape Cod throughout her youth, she developed an affinity for the ocean and the landscape nearby. In 1999, she moved with her husband to California, where the proximity to the everchanging seashore fuels her artistic vision.

I am fascinated with the idea of a moment in time being both finite and infinite.  I begin with a specific time and place and try to distill it, so one is left with both the recognizable feeling about the work, and the desire to know more.  I try to imbue my paintings with a sense of motion, by using color and light.  The paintings should go beyond the detailed representation, to evoke a mood, a passage of time; the push-pull of stillness and motion.  The details are there to force the viewer to continue to look, to notice more and thereby stretch out the time inherent in the moment captured.
